In this fast-paced, hectic world, people often forget to stop and remember to be polite to the people around them. That’s why at Cups, a local coffeeshop in Roanoke, VA, barista Austin Sims decided to make a small statement on the sandwich board outside the shop.
People around the world found the sign hilarious. It quickly went viral on the front page of Reddit, where people applauded the shop’s call for better manners — or else your coffee gets upcharged!
Simms wrote the message on a Sunday. By the end of the weekend, the story showed up on a newspaper in England; by Wednesday, cameracrews started flooding the shop.
As for Simms, he says he never intended to be famous. He said, “I decided because I need to solve all the injustices of the world to start charging more for people who didn’t take the time to say hello and connect and realize we’re all people behind the counter.” Just an attempt at humor — and a good reminder to treat everyone you meet with with respect!
