Mother Jaime Primak Sullivan took her three children out for dessert at her local Dairy Queen one evening, when her children’s manners caught her off guard. After all three of her children, aged 8, 7, and 5 had received their treats from the cashier, none of them muttered a thank you to the employee or to their mother.
Appalled at their lack of manners, Jaime decided to use this instance as a teaching moment for each of them. She recounts what happened as the young cashier looked on, posting the entire scenario on her Facebook page.
Jaime waited for the moment that her children bit into their delicious desserts, and immediately swiped them out of their hands and discarded them in the nearby trash bin.
All three children were absolutely taken aback, but once they realized their mom had something to say about their actions, they quickly quieted down.
“I explained that one day, if they were lucky, they would work a job like that young lady,” Jaime explained. “And I would hope that people would see them. Really see them. Look them in the eye and say thank you. We are too old at 8/7/5 to move through our days without exercising manners and honestly basic human decency. So today, I am the meanest mom in the world.”
After her Facebook post went viral, some agreed that she deserved this title, but most applauded her actions in teaching her children basic human decency.
Jaime says that she is consistently trying to better her children and their impact on the world around them, rather than living in their own bubble.
“It’s not enough to say please and thank you: we have to see people … My children need to see the individual value in people.”
