The Letter Brock Turner’s Mom Wrote To The Judge May Be The Worst Yet

Brock Turner, sadly there are not many people out there who haven’t heard of his name. His case has been one of the most widely talked about criminal court proceedings of 2016 so far, and for good reason. In short, the Stanford University student and athlete has been convicted of multiple charges for sexual assaulting an unconscious woman.

In the wake of the judge’s ruling – Turner has been handed a six-month sentence – there has been widespread outrage at the court’s leniency. Furthermore, a cache of documents have been released – including the victim’s brave testimony – and are continuing to be released, all of which have hit headlines around the world.

The latest document to have hit the net comes from Turner’s mother, Carleen Turner. Turner’s father previously wrote a letter which read, “His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve. That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

Carleen Turner penned a lengthy, three and a half page long letter to her son’s judge, Judge Aaron Perks, prior to his sentencing. To say that her choice of words are infuriating is the understatement of the year. If you want to read the perplexing document in all its entirety you can do so here. If not, here are a few snippets that sum up the general gist.

She starts by referring to her son, the “real” Brock Turner. I guess the person who raped an unconscious female was therefore somehow fake…

“He participated in Cub Scouts during grade school with Dan as his Den leader. The scouts sell popcorn in the fall and after a couple of years, Brock decided he wanted to be the top seller for our region. Dan and I do not take order forms to work, if our kids are selling a product it’s on them to sell. Brock would go door to door to sell, he even got a 90-year-old lady to buy some. She couldn’t eat popcorn but was impressed that Brock took the time to sit with her on her front porch and talk to her. That’s the kind of kid he was—very respectful and polite.”

I’m unsure of what Carleen Turner’s point is here. Does she want us to start a slow applause because her son sold popcorn to a 90-year-old woman when he was a kid? How this is relevant to his case, I will never know.

Carleen Turner continued:

“Our elementary school put on several programs over the years and the big one was the 6th grade musical. Brock’s class did Oliver and he was chosen to play Bill Sykes, the bad guy. . . Brock wouldn’t stop smiling. The teacher said he is supposed to be a mean guy and she could not get Brock to act mean. That’s just him—a nice guy.”

I’m struggling to understand how someone can be a “nice guy” one minute, and then rape an unresponsive woman and send messages of her bare breasts to his friends the next – are you? Flick over to the next page to see more of Carleen Turner’s outrageous statements.

Brock Turner’s arguably delusional mother continued:

“This house now reminds me of the horror of that moment [referring to the phone call from Brock on January 18, 2015]. I have not decorated the house nor have I hung anything on the walls. I am a mom who loves family pictures but I haven’t had the heart to put photos around of our family being happy. How can I? We will never be happy again. Those happy family ties are gone forever, replaced by despair, fear, depression, anxiety, doubt, and dread. I don’t think I have been able to take a deep breath since this happened. My first thought upon wakening every morning is “this isn’t real, this can’t be real. Why him? Why HIM? WHY? WHY?” I have cried every single day since Jan. 18. . . He was a shy and awkward 19-year-old, far away from home trying to fit in with the swimmers he idolized. He is the most trust-worthy and honest person I know. He was telling the truth.”

I can’t help but wonder who Carleen Turner feels the real victim is in all this. Arguably she thinks that it is her son; she says: “Why him? Why HIM? WHY? WHY?” But what about the unconscious woman he assaulted behind a dumpster? You know, the woman whose life her son ruined.

Carleen Turner wasn’t finished yet, she went on:

“Please send him a message that his life still has meaning, that you believe in him. Please give him hope. His life is forever impacted and drastically altered by the ramifications of these guilty verdicts. Ohio is one of the strictest states with the sexual offender registry. Brock will have to register at the highest tier which means he is on the same level as pedophile/child molester. There is no differentiation. . . Your honor, please be kind and merciful to my beautiful son. He is suffering and will continue to pay for this for his entire lifetime.”

I can’t be the only person out there who thinks that Carleen Turner’s last statement is totally deserved. Brock Turner “will continue to pay for this for his entire lifetime.” That’s what happens when you rape someone. Welcome to the 21st century.
