When local officer Taylor Wilkies wrote about this on Facebook, the story quickly went viral.
Here’s what Taylor had to say:
“My buddy’s sister went to Walmart in McDonough, GA to have a cake made for their father’s retirement party.”
“She asked Walmart to make a ‘thin blue line’ cake to commemorate his extensive and honorable service as a dedicated police officer.”
“Walmart refused to honor her request due to it being ‘racist’. To me, this is appalling. People CHOOSE to make EVERYTHING about race. I’m so tired of it. It’s literally exhausting for me to think about now.”
Todd Starnes, a conservative host got wind up the incident and would end up speaking with the daughter of the officer. He asked her about her thoughts on the whole situation. Here’s what she told Starnes:
“I was so shocked. I didn’t know what to do or say or anything. I was trying not to lose my temper or make a scene.”
Initially, the daughter just asked for a version of the police officer’s flag with a blue line. Her request was rejected. Then, the daughter requested a chocolate frosted cake with a blue line. Her request was again rejected. This time on the grounds that it was racist.
“I was disappointed. I go to Walmart all the time — at least once a week spend hundreds of dollars. I just wanted to make my dad a cake to show how much i appreciated him.”
An apology would be made by a Walmart spokesperson. They offered to then make the cake for free and include a gift card.
Here’s what the spokesperson had to say:
“Our goal is to always take care of customers. But, sometimes we misstep. We’re glad we were able to connect with the family to apologize and make this right.”
The store was indeed blasted with criticism, especially on social media. But according to one person who called the store, they are now denying that it ever happened. The man said that when he called, “she was very polite, was familiar with the story, and denied that any of this was true.”
The man continued to press the employee:
“I asked her if I wanted to have the bakery decorate a cake depicting the thin blue line would they do it, and she said that they would be more than glad to, that it’s ridiculous for anyone to make this claim, and that she doesn’t understand why someone would make it. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt at this point.”
