A homeless man in a Florida Publix parking lot prompted shoppers to call the police. He wasn’t breaking the law, but what he carried with him was disturbing. From OrlandoWeekly.com:
Shoppers at a Publix in Sebastian, Florida, called 911 Tuesday afternoon after spotting a homeless man carrying around an actual human skull.
“He was using it as a puppet,” said witness Nick Pecoraro to WPBF. “It smelled like death.”
Pecoraro claimed the homeless man was talking to the skull and showing it to customers in the parking lot. After he caught a whiff of the skull, Pecoraro knew it was real and called 911. WPBF reports:
Pecoraro said he can be heard in the emergency call that WPBF obtained from IRCSO.
“It’s definitely a human skull it’s still got teeth in it,” Pecoraro told an incredulous dispatcher. “I’m standing in front of it, but I’m not touching (it),” he said.
Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Raulen said the skull was taken from human remains found in a wooded area near U.S. 1 and Roseland Road. The homeless man, who is still unidentified, had been living in the area when he discovered the remains near a path. Raulen said that “he had put the skull on top of a trash can over there because he wanted to tell somebody to call the Sheriff’s Office,” and he willingly led police investigators to the corpse.
Sheriff’s deputies said that the area is a known habitat for the homeless, but the remains were not near any known “camps” where they tend to reside.
According to investigators, it is too soon to determine the cause of death or gender of the victim.
