Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel are two of the world’s most renowned musicians who are said to have synesthesia, which gives them the ability to “see sounds.” Fortunately for those of us without this special gift, musician Kenichi Kanazawa has decided to give us a little glimpse into a sound-induced visual spectacle of his own.
As he sends varying sound frequencies through a metal table, the multi-colored sand piles begin dancing from the vibrations. As the frequencies change, so to do the patterns in the sand. This is such a clever way to show just how sound waves travel through different mediums. What we hear with our ears rarely gets a visual accompaniment like this one.
